Bernice grew up in Appin, a small hamlet west of London. She attended John Calvin Christian School (now Strathroy Community Christian School) and London District Christian Secondary School. Bernice already knew that she wanted to be a teacher when she was in elementary school and her love for sports and for French class directed her to further her studies in those areas. She attended UWO and was fortunate to be able to study at Laval University in Quebec City for a year as well. Bernice had the opportunity to work as a camp counsellor for several years at a bilingual camp in St. Donat, a small skiing community near Montreal. She was also heavily involved in church activities such as Sunday School and VBS.
Bernice began teaching Physical Education and French in 1995 at Durham Christian High School in Bowmanville and moved to Courtice Secondary School in 1999. Although her time at Courtice was very positive, Bernice missed the freedom to speak openly about her faith to her classes. In 2002, Bernice and her family moved back to London where she returned to LDCSS, this time as a teacher. She worked as an occasional teacher for the Thames Valley District School Board as well.
In 2008, the French position opened up at LCA and it seemed the perfect opportunity to try teaching at the elementary level. She thoroughly enjoys using drama to help her students understand French and she is encouraged when sceptical students become more and more confident with a different language. Bernice also enjoys coaching various teams at the school.
Bernice stays active by playing volleyball and running. She and her husband, Mike, live in London and attend North Park Community Church with their three children Reece, Taya, and Karys. She feels blessed to be able to serve God and the LCA community at this time.
